UNEW sponsored a trip to New York City in honor of Chinese New Year on February 9, 1986. Chinatown was full of people who were celebrating "The Year of the Tiger" which is the name that the Chinese people use to refer to this year. The Chinese have a system which is a cycle that runs for twelve years in which all years are named after a certain type of animal. Chinatown was full of excitment and this excitment was shown through the throwing of firecrackers. People had the choice of staying in Chinatown, which most people chose to do, or visiting another part of the city if they could not handle the noise. It was very interesting and exciting trip, and if you could handle the firecrackers that were going off around you then you had no problem in having fun. As one person said, "I loved everything about the trip, except the firecrackers.”

Happy Chinese New Year on Feb 17, 2026!
